CHRA turbo cartridges for rebuild and replacement
The centre housing rotating assembly on its own — balanced core, ready to drop into sound housings. For workshops and distributors who rebuild rather than replace the whole unit.
What a CHRA actually is
A CHRA — centre housing rotating assembly, also sold as a turbo cartridge or core assembly — is the working heart of a turbocharger with the housings stripped away. It carries the compressor wheel, the turbine shaft and wheel, the bearing system, the seal plate and the backplate, all balanced as one unit before it is boxed.
Because the aluminium compressor housing and cast-iron turbine housing stay on the vehicle or in the workshop, a cartridge costs a fraction of a complete turbo and ships in a much smaller carton. The trade-off is that the housings have to be reusable: no cracks, no eroded seal bores, no seized wastegate.
Rotating assembly
Compressor wheel, turbine shaft and wheel, thrust bearing or ball-bearing cartridge, seal plate and backplate — assembled and VSR balanced.
Seal and gasket set
Piston ring seals, O-rings, and the gaskets needed to close the core back into the housings. Specify if you also need the actuator.
Housings and actuator
Compressor and turbine housings, wastegate actuator or VGT mechanism stay with you. If any of those are worn, order the complete assembly instead.
Cartridge or complete turbo — the call is made on the housings
Both routes restore the same boost. What decides it is the condition of the parts you already have.
Go with a CHRA when…
- Compressor and turbine housings pass inspection
- The failure is shaft play, bearing noise or an oil seal leak
- The actuator still holds calibration
- Landed cost per unit matters more than workshop time
Go complete when…
- A housing is cracked, warped or has an eroded seal bore
- Wastegate flap or VGT vanes are seized or pitted
- The unit was already rebuilt once and failed again
- You want a bolt-on part with no machining decisions
The cartridge has to match the housings, not just the vehicle
Send the number and a photo
OEM number from the data plate, plus a photo of the stripped core and the compressor housing bore. Trims differ between the same model year, and the bore tells us which trim you have.
We check the core against the housing
Wheel diameter, trim, A/R and actuator type are confirmed against the factory data before anything is reserved.
Confirm, then quote
Price, lead time and whether the gasket set and actuator are included — in writing, before any deposit.
What ships with a cartridge order
| Balancing | VSR balanced as an assembly, not component-balanced |
| Bearings | Journal bearing standard, ball-bearing core on request |
| Seals | Piston ring seals and O-rings fitted; gasket set supplied loose |
| Actuator | Not included as standard — order separately if the old one is worn |
| Warranty | 12 months from delivery against manufacturing defects |
| Packing | Foam-lined carton, neutral or your own artwork |
| MOQ | Per part family — cartridges usually start lower than complete units |
Balance and flow reports can travel with the shipping documents. Ask when you place the order.
Cartridge questions we get every week
Is a CHRA the same as a short block?
No. In engine terms a short block is the block plus internals; in turbo terms the cartridge is only the rotating assembly and its housing. It does not include the compressor or turbine housings, and it is not a complete turbocharger.
Can I fit a cartridge into my existing housings?
Only if the housings are serviceable. Send a photo of the compressor housing bore and the turbine inlet — cracks, erosion and a polished seal bore are the three things that rule a rebuild out.
Do you supply the actuator and fitting kit with the core?
The gasket set ships with the core. The actuator does not, because most rebuilds reuse the original — tell us at quote stage if you want one included.
Can cartridges be mixed with other lines in one container?
Yes. Cartridges are small and light, so they consolidate well with brake, steering and suspension lines in the same FCL, or as LCL when the volume is smaller.
Send the number and a photo of the housing bore.
That is enough for us to confirm the cartridge trim and quote in one working day. If the housings are past saving, we will say so and quote the complete unit instead.
